Digital laboratories need a new generation of professionals

Italian experts identify the digital skills gap as one of the main challenges facing the future of laboratory digitalisation.

Bridging technology and laboratory expertise

As laboratories increasingly adopt advanced digital technologies, the challenge is no longer whether digital tools are available, but whether organisations have the skills needed to use them effectively. This was one of the key conclusions emerging from discussions held at the Tecnopolo of Reggio Emilia, where industry experts, educators and students explored the future of laboratory digitalisation.

The meeting brought together professionals from the metrology and testing sectors alongside vocational education and training representatives to examine how emerging technologies are reshaping laboratory operations. Discussions focused on four key areas driving innovation in the sector: the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Blockchain and Cloud-integrated Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).

Technology is advancing faster than skills

While participants identified numerous opportunities associated with digitalisation, a common concern emerged throughout the discussions: the growing gap between technological innovation and workforce readiness.

Experts agreed that laboratories increasingly require professionals capable of combining technical laboratory knowledge with digital management skills. Beyond specialised technological competencies, participants highlighted the importance of soft skills such as problem-solving, adaptability and technical communication, which are becoming essential in modern laboratory environments.

From paperless processes to intelligent laboratories

The event also showcased practical examples of digital solutions already being implemented within the sector. Participants explored the use of electronic calibration documents to eliminate paper-based processes, blockchain systems to ensure data integrity, high-precision sensing technologies to automate measurements and artificial intelligence tools capable of supporting predictive maintenance and inventory management.

These examples demonstrated how digitalisation can improve efficiency, reduce waste and increase the reliability of laboratory operations while supporting more sustainable working practices.

Defining the laboratory professional of the future

A central topic throughout the discussions was the development of a new professional profile capable of responding to the sector's evolving needs. Participants highlighted the relevance of the proposed "Digital Laboratory Technician" profile, designed to combine laboratory expertise with digital competences required by modern workplaces.

The insights gathered in Italy will contribute to the development of future training materials and best practice guidelines within the Lab of the Future project, helping ensure that laboratories across Europe are prepared for an increasingly digital future.
