Automation, training and connectivity are the key pillars shaping the transition towards smarter and more sustainable laboratories.
A collaborative space to discuss digital transformation in laboratories
On 24 April 2026, the Lab of the Future project organised a Focus Group in Valencia, bringing together laboratory professionals, VET representatives, students and digitalisation experts from across Spain to exchange experiences and discuss the challenges and opportunities associated with digital transformation in laboratories. The event was led by Novotec, Fundación Equipo Humano (FEH) and IES Peset Aleixandre.
Sharing experiences and practical approaches
Participants explored a range of digitalisation practices currently being implemented in both laboratory and vocational education and training environments.
Through interactive polls and live discussions, participants highlighted that digitalisation is no longer understood simply as the introduction of new technologies, but as a comprehensive transformation of laboratory processes, documentation systems and ways of working. Automation, connectivity and access to real-time information emerged as some of the sector’s top priorities.
Addressing challenges and barriers together
The discussion revealed a broad consensus on the benefits of digitalisation, particularly regarding time optimisation, workflow efficiency and process automation. Participants frequently associated digital laboratories with reduced paper consumption, interconnected equipment, cloud-based systems and smarter laboratory data management.
Training was also identified as one of the main priorities for laboratories and VET centres. Participants emphasised that successful digital transformation depends not only on investing in software and equipment, but also on ensuring that professionals, teachers and students have the digital skills required to adapt to new systems and processes.
At the same time, the discussions highlighted several obstacles slowing digital transformation. Lack of funding, limited time, insufficient resources and the need for specialised training were repeatedly mentioned as the main barriers faced by laboratories and educational institutions.
Sustainability also emerged as a recurring theme throughout the debate. Participants associated sustainable laboratories with reduced paper consumption, the use of cleaner energy sources, waste minimisation and more environmentally efficient laboratory practices, reinforcing the close connection between digitalisation and sustainability.
Driving a practical and inclusive digital transformation
The Focus Group provided an important opportunity to gather direct input from industry professionals, vocational education and training centres, and upper-secondary and post-secondary VET students. These contributions will support the development of future project activities, training materials and recommendations aimed at promoting a practical, inclusive and needs-driven digital transformation of laboratories across Europe.
